What is BJJ?

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is an incredibly versatile and powerful martial art with an impressive history rich in tradition and technique. It is widely considered to be one of the most effective unarmed combat systems in the world, and its expansive array of grappling techniques and moves has made it a favorite among martial arts students and fighters alike.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, or BJJ, was developed in 1914 by Brazilian brothers Carlos, Oswaldo, and Gastão Gracie. It is a martial art derived from Kodokan Judo, which was created by Japanese judoka and educator Kano Jigoro in the late 19th century. Due to the influences from both Kodokan Judo and traditional Japanese Jiu-Jitsu, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is often referred to as "the gentle art."

The principles of BJJ focus heavily on using leverage, joint locks, chokes, and throws in order to control an opponent and force them to submit.

It is one of the martial arts with a belt system, which is used to signify a practitioner's level of understanding and expertise.

The BJJ belt system is split in between kids ranking system that starts at 4 years old and the adult ranking system that starts at 16 years old.

The BJJ kids belt ranking system for kids is made up of thirteen belts. White belt (novice) then three sets of grey (beginner), yellow (intermediate), orange (advanced), and green belts (expert).

The BJJ adult belt ranking system is made up of five different color rankings. White (beginner), blue (intermediate), purple (advanced), brown (expert), and black (master).

Upon starting BJJ, a student is usually assigned a white belt. As their skills and knowledge increase, they can begin to rise through the levels by passing tests and demonstrating the necessary skill and knowledge required for the next level.

Once the student reaches the black belt, they can become instructors themselves and pass along the art and knowledge Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

We are proud that at Fitness Fight Factory we have developed students from the white belt level all the way to black!
